For many young girls, wearing the Indian Armed Forces uniform is not just a career choice. It is a dream they have carried since childhood. But for a long time, the path to the National Defence Academy was not open to female candidates in the same way.
That changed with the historic entry of women into NDA.
Today, girls preparing after Class 12 have a new opportunity to begin their defence journey through one of India’s most respected military training institutions. But an opportunity is only the beginning. The real challenge is preparing for the written examination, building fitness, developing confidence and being ready for the SSB process.
So, if you or your daughter is thinking about NDA for Girls in 2026, what should you actually know?
The opening of NDA to female candidates was a major change in India’s defence education system. Girls can now compete for NDA entry subject to the eligibility requirements of the relevant UPSC notification.
But it is important to understand that NDA preparation is not only about clearing an examination.
A candidate has to prepare for the written test and then face the Services Selection Board process. Medical and other eligibility requirements also matter.
This is why preparation should ideally begin well before the examination.
A student in Class 11 or 12 can gradually work on Mathematics, English, General Ability, current affairs, communication and physical fitness rather than trying to cover everything in the final few months.
The first thing I would tell any beginner is: don’t try to become perfect in the first month.
Start with the basics.
Build Strong Mathematics
Mathematics can become a major concern for students who have weak fundamentals. Instead of immediately solving difficult questions, revise your basics and then slowly increase the level of practice.
Make question-solving a regular habit. Reading a formula once does not mean you know how to use it.
Improve English and General Awareness
Read every day, even if it is only for 20–30 minutes.
Regular reading can help with vocabulary, comprehension and awareness of current events. For General Ability, revise school-level concepts properly before moving towards more advanced questions.
Do Not Ignore Fitness
Written preparation often gets all the attention, while fitness is pushed aside.
That is not a good idea.
Running, basic strength exercises, stretching and outdoor activities can gradually improve stamina. You do not need to transform your fitness level in one week. Start slowly and stay regular.
The written examination is only one stage of the selection journey.
SSB Interview Preparation should not be considered as something which begins after the result of the written test. Communication, confidence, team work, awareness and decision making are built up over time.
For instance, if a student has a high academic achievement level but rarely speaks in group discussions. She does not have to make dramatic efforts to become very talkative at once, but she can begin by giving her views clearly in the class discussions, reading the news relating to current affairs and participating in team activities.
Confidence can be improved through small steps such as these.
The purpose is not to assume a role. It should make you more at ease in stating your true feelings.
One question students often ask is, “What are the biggest mistakes NDA aspirants make?”
One of the biggest is confusing preparation with collecting resources.
A student may have five books, ten PDFs and several online videos but still not solve enough questions.
Another common mistake is avoiding weak subjects.
If Mathematics is difficult, it is tempting to keep studying English because English feels easier. But that does not solve the actual problem.
Mock tests also should not be treated only as a scorecard. Your mistakes tell you what needs attention.
Ask yourself:
That analysis is where improvement happens.
“Is self-study enough for NDA?” The honest answer is: it depends.
A disciplined student can make good progress through self-study if she has reliable resources, a proper timetable and the habit of testing herself.
However, some students need guidance to understand what to study, how much to practise and where they are going wrong.
Students exploring structured options may come across NDA Coaching in Delhi, while those looking at defence-oriented schooling may also research options such as a Sainik School in Ambala.
Neither option automatically guarantees success. The student’s own effort, consistency and willingness to learn from mistakes matter much more.
If you are starting from zero, don’t make an unrealistic timetable of 10 hours a day.
Start with something you can actually follow.
For example, a student in Class 11 could spend a couple of focused hours on NDA-related study after school, practise Maths regularly, read for current affairs and include physical activity in the daily routine.
On weekends, she can take a longer practice session or mock test.
As the examination approaches, the study time and test frequency can gradually increase.
So, “How should beginners prepare for the NDA exam?”
Start with the syllabus, understand your current level, strengthen your basics, practise questions, revise regularly and track your mistakes.
There is no secret shortcut.
If someone asks, “What is the best strategy to crack NDA in the first attempt?”, my answer would be: start early, study consistently and keep checking your progress.
Do not wait for motivation every day.
Some days will be productive. Some will not. What matters is returning to your routine instead of giving up after one bad day or one low mock-test score.
Think about it like learning to run. You do not become fit after one long run. You improve by showing up repeatedly.
NDA preparation works in much the same way.
The introduction of girls into the NDA has thus presented an opportunity for young women who desire to serve the nation in the Armed Forces.
But, preparation, patience and discipline are still required during the journey.
Don’t worry if you are preparing for NDA in 2026, as you will learn more later. Look at the next topic, the next practice and the next improvement.
Start small. Stay consistent. Remember to learn from the errors.
The dream might sound grand, but the first step to any successful journey is a serious decision to begin.
