The National Defence Academy (NDA) examination is a prestigious national-level exam conducted twice a year by UPSC, usually in April and September. It serves as the primary entry route for young aspirants to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as officers.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (10+2). For the Indian Air Force and Navy, Physics and Mathematics are mandatory subjects.
Age Limit
Applicants must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of admission.
Physical Fitness
Candidates must meet the prescribed medical and physical standards, including height, weight, and eyesight, as defined by NDA guidelines.
The NDA selection process consists of two major stages:
Mathematics – 300 Marks
Objective-type questions covering Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Geometry, and Statistics.
General Ability Test (GAT) – 600 Marks
Includes English, General Knowledge, and Science topics such as Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Affairs.
Candidates who clear the written examination are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, a 5-day assessment process that evaluates:
Psychological Tests – Personality traits, reasoning, and decision-making ability
Group Tasks (GTO) – Leadership, teamwork, communication, and cooperation
Personal Interview – Confidence, motivation, and suitability for a defence career
The final merit list is prepared based on combined performance in the written exam and SSB interview.
